The Cathie Marsh Institute (CMI) has nine research groups that address the Institute's theme of social and political inequality.
Data, Skills and Training
Focusing on developing a research agenda around data, skills and training, with an emphasis on statistical and data literacy.
Democracy and Elections
A multi-disciplinary research group, drawn mainly from the fields of political science and sociology.
Ethnicity and Migration
Bringing together a range of interests, incorporating work from political science, sociology, demography/human geography and social statistics.
Lifelong Health
The Lifelong Health & Well-being research group amalgamates previous CCSR research groups and works closely with allied CMI-based research projects.
Privacy, Data Protection and Trust
This interdisciplinary group comprises academics working in statistics, social science, social policy, computer science and law.
Social Data Science
Analysing new forms of large scale unstructured heterogeneous data in social contexts.
Social Mobility
The Social Mobility and Labour Markets Group aims to promote research on social mobility and labour.
Statistical Modelling
This group focuses on the development and application of statistical models to investigate substantive phenomena in the social sciences and beyond.
Survey Methods and Analysis
The Survey Methods and Analysis Group aims to provide a focal point for researchers on the development and application of survey methodology and the analysis of complex survey data.
Our key themes
Research within the Cathie Marsh Institute is characterised by two overarching themes:
- Complex data
We focus on methodological and statistical development, often with a strong science social component. Our work is supported primarily by research groups within the Disciplinary Area of Social Statistics.
- Methods that make a difference
This theme focuses on population and social change, with the application of advanced quantitative methods to key social science questions.
