Why Charts Matter

Speaker: Alan Smith OBE, Data Visualisation Editor, Financial Times

The worlds of academia and journalism arguably share one historical publishing trait: the primacy of text over other forms of content. This talk will explain how that convention is being challenged at the Financial Times with a new strategy for data visualisation that aims to bring graphics and words together to create focused, cohesive and memorable stories that result in 'greater than the sum of its parts' journalism. Key elements of the strategy - standards/best practice, workflow and toolset, skills/training and wider corporate/cultural change will be discussed. Many of the aspects covered will resonate both with academic practitioners and those seeking to develop skills with a view to future career paths.
